I had the pleasure of second shooting for Erika Hearts Photography this summer. It was the perfect way to ease back into photographing weddings after having Rowan earlier this year.
Unlike most photographers, I didn’t start out second shooting, I jumped straight into lead shooting. A second shooter acts as backup for the main photographer, we grab shots from different angles, capture details or candids of guests while they take portraits.
Being a second shooter has the advantage of letting you be a bit more creative and try out new ideas since those “money shots” aren’t dependent on you. It is a little tricky because I’m not involved as involved in the wedding as the main photographer, so I’m meeting clients for the first time on the wedding day.
E & B had a beautiful wedding at the Orchard in Azle, Texas. Thank the Lord, even though it was the Fourth of July there was a wonderful breeze so it felt lovely outside during the ceremony.
I only photographed a portion of their day, but I got to be present for my favorite part of a wedding. Before the ceremony, in the bridal suite with the bride and all her girls–there is just an energy like no other when you get a bunch of ladies together to doll themselves up to celebrate the love story of the bride. Some may have only met recently but there is an almost instant intimacy betwixt them, with all the nipping, tucking, and tweaking that happens before they head down the aisle.
Keep your eyes peeled for the white pony, Princess Bride vibes anyone?
